How to handle criticism like a trooper
When you work in a creative industry, you’re inevitably going to receive criticism on your work from time to time. There’s no avoiding it.
This can sting a little at first, particularly if you’re new to the game. However with a little shift in perspective, you’ll find that this type of feedback can be incredibly helpful.
With the right approach, criticism can help you improve the quality of your work and your client relationships. And given that you’ll have to deal with it either way, wouldn’t it be better to reap the benefits?
Check out this week’s episode of GilbHub TV for some tips on handling criticism like a trooper…
(And find out how a pair of tap shoes fits into all of this…)

So… what exactly is a white paper?
Переглядів 95 тис.8 років тому
I’m often asked to talk about what I do. Sometimes I’m pitching to a networking group and other times it just comes up in polite ‘by the coffee machine’ chat. The conversation often goes like this… “So Hanna, what is it you do?” “I’m a copywriter. I help people to write things like website copy, blogs, email campaigns and white papers.” (During this last bit, they’re nodding enthusiastically… r...
Feeling nervous? Tips for presenting to a group
Переглядів 1,9 тис.8 років тому
A GilbHub TV viewer recently asked me for tips on presenting. Specifically, they asked for advice on overcoming nerves when delivering to a group. I immediately thought of my pal Dexter Moscow. Dexter is an expert on all aspects of presenting and recently published a fantastic LinkedIn article, on this very subject. In this week’s episode of GilbHub TV, I share a key idea from Dexter’s ‘Moscow ...

We're almost three full weeks into 2016 and it's time to review those resolutions we made back in the heady excitement of January 1st. How are yours doing? Like a lot of business owners I've spent the last few weeks thinking about my professional goals for the year. I was discussing these goals at a recent BRX meeting, with a very nice lady named Rita Edah. Rita is a life coach and during our c...
There, they’re or their? Apostrophes and confusing words
Переглядів 1628 років тому
Some grammar rules in the English language just fuel confusion. “I before E, except after C.” (Oh and in ‘weird’… and ‘beige’… and ‘foreign’ and a few other words…) We also have multiple words that sound the same but are spelt differently and have different meanings. Whether or weather? Your or you’re? There, they’re or their? Most of us covered all this in school. Remember? It was that day whe...
This is my goal for 2016 - what’s yours?
Переглядів 778 років тому
It’s January so (perhaps a little predictably) I’m thinking ‘New Year Resolutions’. If you’re a business owner, these resolutions might sound familiar: “This year I will absolutely definitely blog every week.” “In 2016 I will vastly improve my marketing content.” “During the next 12 months I will clarify my brand image once and for all.” If these are on your list for the coming year, let me kno...

You know how it goes- you’re mid-way through explaining the intricacies of the technology that puts you miles ahead of your competition and… and their eyes have already glazed ov...
Breaking the (grammar) rules
Переглядів 2518 років тому

In the right context, it will even improve your writing! So throw caution to the wind and watch this episode of GilbHub TV. (You MAVERICK!) [Video] Go rogue- share this video with your network ...
Negotiating your salary or freelance rate
Переглядів 2,5 тис.8 років тому
Money is an awkward topic for many of us. Whether we’re scraping by on a few pounds or rolling in it… either way, we’d really rather not talk about it. The thing is, cash does play a rather integral role in business. So at some point, you may just have to say the ‘m’ word out loud. I recently received a request from a viewer, asking for tips on negotiating a salary. I thought this was a fantast...
The voices in my head: How to write in a specific brand voice
Переглядів 2398 років тому
That’s right, it’s October and I’m pulling out the Halloween themes! But no need for concern - this week’s GilbHub TV episode is about brand voices… Your brand voice consists of the tone, pace and language you use, when writing on behalf of your company. It’s a huge part of the brand image, which you build throughout your published content. As a copywriter, I often have to write in someone else...

3 Simple steps to painless proofreading
Переглядів 17 тис.8 років тому
Do you love proofreading? Is it the very reason you get out of bed each day, red biro in hand, ready to take on those grammatical errors? No me neither. I love writing. I love the creativity… the language… the crafting of ideas into communication… But re-reading something 20 times, looking for that one misplaced comma? Not so fun. Unfortunately, proofreading is an essential part of copywriting....

Yeah they did not tell you about Grammarly. Yeah do Grammarly. Try this. 8 suggestions. Turn on Grammarly and find them. I make so many punctuation, grammar, and extra prhases. Captain Baur New York Air National At the January 11, 1997 TWA Flight 800 Inquiry by the NTSB, Capt. Baur stated that he was co-pilot the night of July 17, 1996 at 8:30 p.m. on a NY National Guard H-60 helicopter training mission performing practice approaches at Gabreski Airport waiting for it to become dark enough to do night vision goggle aerial refueling with their tanker. Capt. Baur was co-piloting on the approach to Gabreski Airport Runway 2-4 and upon completion of the approach started turning to the Southwest and looked up and saw what looked like an incendiary device. He asked his engineer if it was a pyrotechnic, and then saw a succession of three explosions each larger than the other and called the tower that “two aircraft just had a mid-air off the coast” and am proceeding there immediately. Mr. Wiemeyer, the NTSB interrogator, asked about the light conditions at the time. Baur replied that it was dusk, but it was still light out. Wiemeyer asked about the color of the explosions, and Baur replied reddish. Gabreski Airport weather station at 7:45 p.m. reported weather conditions at the airport as hazy and cloudy with winds at 4 knots.

Figures... anytime there's a new "buzzword" going around, it's a marketing gimmick. Companies are now just trying to make brochures that sound more "academic". LOL!
